Two Seattle brands are joining forces as the Sounders FC announced a new deal with Amazon on Tuesday in which Prime Video will be the exclusive digital streaming platform for the professional soccer team’s games.
Prime members will have access to all non-nationally televised Sounders matches throughout the team’s regional broadcast territory, which includes the entirety of Washington state.
The Sounders will be the first Major League Soccer team with club-specific content available from a dedicated team page on Prime Video, and content viewable across a variety of devices will extend beyond matches to include highlights, player interviews, press conferences, and more.
The three-year agreement is set to run through the 2022 MLS season and the streaming action starts Aug. 26 when the Sounders play at the LA Galaxy.
“At Sounders FC, we often refer to ourselves as a family, and that notion extends to the greater Seattle community,” Sounders FC owner Adrian Hanauer said in a news release. “When I think about our hometown, few brands are as closely associated with Seattle’s sense of innovation and ingenuity as Amazon.”
Hanauer called the media rights agreement a “proud day for the club.”
It’s another move further into sports broadcasting for Amazon, which has dabbled in soccer a bit with the streaming of Premier League matches on Prime back in 2018 and now on Twitch. Amazon recently extended its deal to stream the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” games and also partnered with the New York Yankees to stream 21 games from that baseball franchise this season.
Sounders fans watching on Prime Video this season will get the same traditional broadcast as JOEtv, which will continue to air games over local cable. There are no plans for a Twitch stream.

After a stoppage of play caused by the coronavirus pandemic, MLS play resumed with the five-week MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Fla., which was won by the Portland Timbers. Seattle’s first match following that competition will be against Portland, also in Orlando, on Sunday. The defending MLS Cup champions return to CenturyLink Field on Aug. 30 against Los Angeles FC. There will be no fans in attendance because of the health crisis.
“Sounders FC is a fundamental part of our culture here in the Pacific Northwest, and as a club they have always been at the forefront of innovation in professional sports,” Marie Donoghue, VP of Global Sports Video at Amazon, said in a statement. “We share this common vision for innovation at Prime Video, and are committed to delighting fans and enhancing the value of a Prime membership through sports, and we believe this deal accomplishes just that.”
Amazon recently bought the naming rights to Seattle’s KeyArena and will change the name to Climate Pledge Arena. It will be home to the city’s new NHL franchise.
